New troubling bottled water research comes on the heels of years of warnings and similar research conducted by the Polaris Institute. In fact, last year we exposed that the Canadian Food and Inspection Agency conducted 49 product recalls of bottled water between 2000 and 2008 due to a number of health concerns.Another major blow hit the bottled water industry this week –
Canadian researchers at Montreal’s C-crest Laboratories found “revolting” amounts of bacteria in 70% of bottled water brands tested.
Bottled water has been marketed as the “safe alternative” when the fact remains that
the bottled water industry is less regulated than municipal water systems,
consumes more energy and
releases more harmful toxins into the environment than tap water.
Across Canada, citizens have been organizing to phase out the sale and provision of bottled water on college and university campuses and on municipal property, while promoting public water infrastructure. To date
78 municipalities, eight school boards and seven post-secondary institutions have restricted bottled water sales across Canada.
